What Is Clean Skin Care?

clean skin care defined good ingredients versus bad ingredients what is clean skin care

Clean skin care means selecting products that are free from ingredients that disrupt the skin's pH balance, strip it from its natural flora and cause gradual long term damage to the stratum corneum by causing it to become sensitized, inflamed and dried up.

Ingredients to avoid are all sulfates and laureates found in foaming cleansing products. Cleansers that preserve the skin's pH and its microbiota will use sugar tensides in their mildly foaming cleansers known as glucosides.

Petroleum gel, Paraffin, Mineral Oil, PEGs (polyethylene glycol), are synthetic emulsifiers and humectants that form the base of many high end skin care brands. They envelop the skin with an impenetrable cover, clogging the skin's pores causing break outs in younger skin, and choking the breath out of older skin slowing the natural cycle of cell turn over and causing the skin to age prematurely. Clean quality skin care will use caprylic/capric triglycerides which is a coconut ester, vegetable glycerin, jojoba oil, squalene, shea butter fruit extract and other plant based emulsifiers as its base. These natural ingredients are a lot more costly but are skin identical and will heal and improve the skin's quality in the short and long term.

Last but not least on the list of ingredients to avoid are all synthetic alcohols, the bad alcohols which dry out the skin, and strip it of its natural oils causing it to become irritated and sensitized.

Synthetic Alcohols To Avoid

  • Isopropyl alcohol / Isopropanol
  • Denatured alcohol
  • SD or CD alcohol

Fatty alcohols and natural grain alcohol such as acetyl/cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol are good alcohols used in clean natural skin care as emollients, stabilizers and natural preservatives.

Finally all synthetic preservatives such as parabens, phenoxyethanols, and formaldehyde releasers should be avoided.  Natural preservatives such as naturally derived Propylene glycol (a mixture of vegetable glycerin and grain alcohol) as well as natural fragrances from aromatic plants are the cleaner alternative used in quality natural skin case.
